FEARLESS LEARNING

Harriett J. Ball is a nationally renowned keynote speaker and
repeat presenter for numerous public and charter schools;
national, state, and district conferences; and churches.
She retired from teaching in Houston ISD at the age of 50 to
start on her God-sent mission to reach and teach others how
to teach skills in less time with greatest retention by weaving
audio/visual/ and tactile-kinesthetic ideas into their lesson to
enable them to capture and hold the attention of students,
especially the 'under-taught', beyond belief and in less time.
How? Each student is being taught in their strongest learning
mode, the lessons are inter-twined with songs, scenarios,
and movement, which are familiar to the students.
Harriett's miraculous gift is in the areas of Lang. Mechanics,
Reading Comprehension, Math, and Behavior Modification.
She is the mentor of David Levin and Michael Feinberg,
who learned to master her techniques in a few years, then
birthed the first KIPP Academy, named after one of Harriett's
songs, "Knowledge Is Power". There are now 66 KIPP
Academies in 20 states across the U. S., using her teaching
techniques.
Her works have been showcased on Oprah (April and
August of 2006), BET, The Early Show, Apollo Theater,
Presidential Convention of George Bush, 60 Minutes,
CNN, C-SPAN Questions and Answers, in Washington
Post, Houston Press, Christian Science Herald, Teacher
Magazine, Education World,.. She has been nominated for
the Brock Award twice and Teacher of the Year six times.
She is honored by Mayor and City Council of Galveston,Tx
with a proclamation of September 14 as 'Harriett Ball Day'
for the success of several of their elementary and MS on the
TAAS state testing. One of Galveston's schools, Scott El.,
moved from 3-25% to 89-91% for their 3-5th graders in one
year with 15 days student training. On June 23, 2009, she was
inducted into the 2009 HALL OF FAME of the National
Public Charter Schools Convention, held in DC.
She received B.A. in Educ.,Cum-Laud, at Huston-Tillotson
College; M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie-View
A&M College, worked toward Administrative and Bilingual Ed.
degree Univ. of TX of Austin and Southwest Texas State
College. But, her gift to teach in such depth and brevity was
not until the age of 40. The rest is history in the making.
She taught grades 2-5 regular classes and twice-retained 6-
12th graders in summer programs. She has held positions of
Assistant to the Principal (Fairchild El, Houston), grades
1-6 Counselor, Title 1 Reading Specialist and Reading
Coordinator, created plays, poems, and step-shows to
showcase students' acquisition of Lang. Arts and Math skills.
In the book, '21 NO-EXCUSE SCHOOLS', one of the spotlighted school leaders, Mike Feinberg, of KIPP Academies, is quoted to say Harriett's teaching strategies "enabled their students to catch up with their peers in the first year at KIPP". Harriett is also showcased in the book, TEACHERS: The Enlightened, The Exceptional, The Extraordinary, by John Yow, Lionheart Books, Ltd., and WORK HARD, BE NICE, by Jay Matthews.
Her next mission is to open national teacher-training institutes where teachers can come to learn how to master the art of teaching 'under-taught' students in less time with maximum results, minimizing off-task behavior and instilling the joy for teaching / learning. Teaching, like learning, must be a mission not a milstone.
Many students are erroneously labeled as 'under-performing'. But, in reality, many are simply performing at the level they have been 'taught'.
NO MORE BLAME AND EXCUSES ARE ACCEPTABLE.
