About Harriett Ball
Harriett Ball , a teacher's teacher, writer, artist, entertainer, and motivator is a former Houston and Austin I.S.D. Elementary master teacher and counselor for over 20 years. She has been elected campus "Teacher of the Year" six times, holds the title of "Honorable Mention" in "The Top 10 Excellent Teachers of America" (a national competition sponsored by "Learning Magazine and the Oldsmobile Corporation), and is hailed as an outstanding presenter in institutions and school districts across the nation. She has created a unique technique of using multi-sensory, mnemonic teaching strategies that reach and teach "At Risk" students in their strongest learning mode.
Her awesome ability to inspire and train is evidenced in the results of thousands of elementary, middle, and high students and teachers in public schools across the nation and at over 52 nationally acclaimed KIPP Academies (Knowledge Is Power Program, grades K-8 college preparatory schools), which are named after her song. 'Knowledge Is Power'. The KIPP Academies are "the brainchild of Harriett Ball" as quoted by David Levin, co-founder of the KIPP Academies, who was trained to use Harriett's techniques for over 3 years before the first KIPP Academy became a reality.
Harriett has been showcased on 'The Early Show', 'BET', 'The Oprah Show' (twice), guest speaker on Houston, TX television news channels and talk-shows, and a satellite radio talk-show. She has been featured in 'The Washington Post', 'USA Today', 'The Houston Post', 'The Houston Press', ''New York Times', and several other newspapers across the nation. She holds a 'Harriett Ball Day Proclamation' from the City Mayor of Galveston, TX, and in honor for the work she had done to improve students' state test performance in Galveston and has been honored at 'The Apollo Theater' by David Levin for her contribution to the KIPP Academies. She is featured as one of the top presenters in the book, "Teachers, The Enlightened, the Excellent, The Extraordinary" by John Yow, which can be found in every Barnes & Nobles bookstore. She is a repeat presenter/trainer for KIPP Academies, Teach For America Corps, C-PAL of Texas Southern University, CDL (Center for Dev. Learning), VLI (Visionary Leadera Institute), BAEO (Black Alliance for Educ. Options), multiple national and state associations of education, (i.e. NABSE), Claflin University, and numerous public and charter schools (Elem-HS) in Texas, Georgia, New York, Indiana, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Oregon, Kentucky, California, S.Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Kansas, and Michigan.

About Harriett Ball Enterprises, Inc.
As teachers we must reach all of our students. Finding the teaching styles that best suits and captivates the interest of each student challenges even the most experienced teachers. Just as deaf and blind students learn through their strongest learning modality, all students need to be taught through their strongest modality. Since no group of students learn the same way, teachers need to develop "multi-sensory teaching" techniques that simultaneously address audio, visual and tactile-kinesthetic (A-V-T/K) learners.
Harriett Ball has developed a teaching program designed to reach every student in their strongest learning mode by including A-V-T/K strategies in your teaching. Her strategies allow equal access to learning, especially for the lower performing students. The many of the 'at-risk' population have been incorrectly labeled because they have not been reached and taught in their strongest mode of learning.
Harriett's technique weaves the state objectives/proficiency skills into multi-sensory (whole body) teaching techniques. Multi-sensory teaching, often referred to as mnemonics, is an effective venue to reach and teach students who do not perform well with traditional teaching. Mnemonics is an array of memory enhancements that include rhythm, rhyme, codes, verbal and visual cues, patterns, and story-weaving that evolve around students' experiences that are relevant and concrete to them. The mnemonics stimulate and enhance the learning of concepts across the curriculum and lessen the achievement gap.
If you question whether Harriett's techniques are effective, take a look at the research below by Caine and Caine, 1994 and Sylwester, 1995 on Brain Based Learning:
Principals of Brain-Based Learning
1. Emotion and attention are the principal preliminary processes that the brain uses for survival.
2. Emotion drives attention. 3. Attention drives learning and memory.
4. Humans are cooperative and social species.
5. Learners learn by seeking connections to what they already know.
6. Learners need stimulation and plenty of feedback during the learning process.
7. The brain seeks patterns.
Tactile-kinesthetic students make up at least 40% of an average class. Students of the 21st century are immersed with media, computers, and inter-active games that focus on stimulating emotions, repetition, competition, fast-paced info, relating the new to the familiar, imagination, movement, rhyme and rhythm. Generally, 'traditional' teaching methods use very little of the above, resulting in low daily performance and test scores. The teaching methods taught in most teacher workshops, colleges and university settings are what we experienced as students ourselves and do not meet the overwhelming needs of tactile-kinesthetic (T-K) learners.
Therefore, if we keep teaching the same way, can we expect different results?
'Under-Achieving' students thrive when T-K activities are added to the A/V. This combination is truly a 'whole/body teaching' skill that every teacher should embrace and incorporate daily into every subject area. The HBE Program was designed to rebuild the learning base for students who do not effectively learn with only A/V stimuli. Harriett shows you how to combine A/V/T-K activities into lessons, even for students with special needs. The lower performers show the greatest gains. Harriett's technique builds long-term memory and boosts the ability to easily transfer to higher level thinking. Her teaching style is divinely designed for those who are not mathematically inclined and/or learning challenged in any basic subject area.
OUR MISSION Leave NO teacher OR child behind. Train teachers how to teach and nourish under-educated students into focused, flourishing, FearLESS B.E.A.R.S. and L.I.O.N.S. (Bright Eager And Responsible Students who are Learning In Outrageously Natural Speeds)
OUR GOALS Eliminate barriers that deny students a safe and suppportive learning environment. Provide effective, alternative teaching skills Reduce teacher and student stress/anxiety Encourage higher expectations for student achievement Create a life-long thirst for learning into students Build/Create proficient, independent readers who can comprehend what they have read Create a working knowledge of language mechanics to apply in speaking, writing, and test-taking
